A visit of Frank Lampard’s in-form Chelsea is the last thing Manchester City will have wanted after seeing their title hopes suffer a huge blow.
The 3-1 loss to leaders Liverpool at Anfield before the international break left the champions in fourth place, nine points adrift of the top.
This will be the sternest league test for Lampard’s side to date but we are backing them to avoid defeat at 19/10 as our opening Man City vs Chelsea prediction.
A Look At Manchester City’s Betting Odds
Manchester City’s miserable run at Anfield – one win in 29 visits – continued in a match which left Pep Guardiola raging at some controversial VAR calls.
City felt they should have been awarded a penalty when a cross from Kevin De Bruyne deflected up off Bernardo Silva’s arm and hit Trent Alexander-Arnold’s outstretched limb.
With referee Michael Oliver waving away penalty claims – and doing so again in the second half – Liverpool broke and Fabinho drilled home a 25-yard shot.
Mo Salah’s stooping header doubled Liverpool’s lead and Sadio Mane added a third early in the second half before Bernardo Silva’s consolation.
Liverpool lost only one league match last season in finishing just a point behind City in a thrilling title race and have dropped just two points in the opening 12 matches.
Midfielder Ilkay Gundogan said: “We have to accept it, but there is a long way to go. Last season in January we were quite far behind and were able to turn it around.
“But we are not independent anymore – we have to see how our competitors do, especially Liverpool, and that makes the situation more uncomfortable.
“We have to keep trying to play well and amass as many points as possible. I don’t feel the title has already gone, and I don’t think the Liverpool players will feel like that, because we are all professionals.”
Lampard’s men have scored 11 of their 18 goals away from home in the opening 45 minutes so, looking at the Man City vs Chelsea odds, we think 13/5 that both teams score in the first half has strong appeal.
Man City’s last line-up: Bravo, K Walker, Stones, Fernandinho, Angelino, Rodri, Gundogan, De Bruyne, B Silva, Sterling, Aguero.
A Look At Chelsea’s Betting Odds
Second-half goals from Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic secured a sixth straight Premier League win for the Blues as they beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
They endured a frustrating first half against an obdurate, well-drilled Palace side but found a way through after the break with Abraham’s 10th goal of the season and Pulisic’s fifth in three games.
Lampard said: “Every game in the Premier League is hard, particularly against a team as organised as Palace.
“In the first half we started well, then allowed our tempo to drop, but when we came out in the second half with the intent that we did, we won the game relatively comfortably – a nice, solid win with a clean sheet.
“We’ve had teams come here and be difficult to break down, it’s a test of not only how you unlock the door, but can you switch on to make sure you don’t get hit by the sucker punch?
“I was really delighted with the game management. I got as much joy out of Kurt Zouma and Fikayo Tomori’s performances in defence, and the midfielders shielding in front of them, as I did our attacking play.”
The Blues have been beaten just once in 11 games in all competitions – a 2-1 home reverse to Manchester United in the EFL Cup.
But they have come up short against their ‘big six’ rivals this season, also losing at United on the opening day as well as being beaten at home to Liverpool.
However, we will round off our Man City vs Chelsea betting tips with a speculative punt of 2-2 at 15/1 .
Last Chelsea line-up: Arrizabalaga, James, Zouma, Tomori, Emerson, Willian, Kante, Kovacic, Mount, Pulisic, Abraham.
